She Crossed the Waters tells the story of a young Irish woman who flees from the law and finds herself on an island in the Bahamas after her ship to America sinks. She is taken in by a family of wreckers: James, a young man who is in love with Hannah, tries to protect her from his overbearing mother, Hetty, a former slave who now owns a small plantation and treats Hannah like a slave. Hannah searches for ways to make and save money to get to America. While slave uprisings become more prevalent, fear pervades the island, and Hannah must make a decision: stay where she is or find the courage to start her life over once again.
